ENGLISH ESSAY ‘Two faces of a
big city’ FROM 325 TO 350 WORDS
Big cities of our country such as Karachi, Lahore,
Hyderabad and Multan have two faces. Millions of people live in a big city.
Some people here are very rich but some are very poor. Also, there is
substantial middle-class population. The life of its inhabitants is very hectic
as there is cut-throat competition in every field and a made race for money is
always on. The rich people have everything at their beck and call as they enjoy
everything which money can buy. The luxurious life they lead puts to shame the
kings and queens of the by-gone days. They earn and spend money like water and
are said to be rolling in wealth. They spend their evenings in the most
expensive hotels and clubs and enjoy the most expensive foods and wines. They
have little time to spend with their families and children. Their adolescent
children fall victims to many bad habits in the prime of their youth as they
indulge in all sort of activities without any hindrance from any side.
The other face of a big city is the abject poverty.
The poor whose troubles are endless, struggle their whole life to make both
ends meet. They get nectar only in a sieve. The poor live in slums, sleep on
dusty footpaths and are unable to get even a square meal. Their children are
deprived of education, proper clothes, medicines and even potable water. They
are made to work right from infancy and have to resort to selling wares and
even beg for their survival. Their womenfolk also have to undergo all sorts of
sufferings for mere survival. Thus, the poor are born penniless and they die
penniless.
The so-called elite class is self-centered and is
not ready even to look at or hear about the dwellers of hovels and the very
existence of the poor is unbearable to them. No one is ready to extend a
helping hand to the downtrodden of their society.
