ENGLISH ESSAY ‘Advantages And disadvantages of television’ FROM 550 TO 600 WORDS



Television is one of the most popular ways to relax. It is one of the biggest sources of entertainment at home. Watching television is also an important part of one’s routine these days. Television today offers a variety of programme for all age groups. Unlike the yesteryears, television is now available 24 hours and on all days. Earlier, it was limited to a few hours only.
Television came to Pakistan in the early eighties and since then it has changed the perspective and outlook of our society. Many people were against getting television to Pakistan. But today, it has become an indispensable source of recreation.
Television has a strong impact on the society. It has many advantages and disadvantages if we being with the advantages, there are many. First, it keeps the audience informed through the informative channels.  Many such channels keep telecasting the latest news from all around the world. Each and every happening reaches the audience in split seconds.
There are other channels such as Animal Planet, Discovery, National Geographic that educates about the various species of animals, forests, oceans, underwater world etc. Nature is its various hues the pleasant and the unpleasant come alive on the television.

Television also offers a wide range of popular entertainment programmes. People mostly watch it to relax after a hard day’s work. Various programmes such as talent hunt shows, comedy programmes, movies, dramas, reality shows etc., keep the audience busy. Different sports channels caters to those interested in sport. Many channels are specially designed for children. They impart information in a fun way.
Majority of people in Pakistan are illiterate and live in the villages. These people benefit much from the information and education imparted through television programmes. Some programmes such as hamara kisaan help farmers by informing them about the latest techniques and technologies used in farming.
Thus, each channel satisfies a different audience. The benefits of television are numerous. People become aware of the political and social problems affecting society, new developments in science and technology and so on. Views of eminent and learned personalities greatly help them in forming their opinions.
Television also helps in removing the social and political evils from the society. It highlights the evils of the caste system, dowry, drinking, gambling, etc.
Similarly, government programmes such as family plannings, forestation, adult education and cleanliness are also propagated successfully through this medium.
In spite of all the above advantages, television has its disadvantages also. The main disadvantages are quality of unsuitable content for children. Children have the tendency of getting influenced by whatever they see and sometimes violence and bad languages affects their mind and disturbs and diverts them from their studies and daily activities.
Watching too much television also affects the healthy adversely. Spending hours watching TV is harmful for the eyes. It is thus very risky for young children who always sit very close to the television set.
Television also distracts children from doing physical exercises or indulging in sports which is very important for their growth. Children spend most of their waking hours watching television thus wasting time and being lazy.
In spit of all these disadvantages, the advantages are definitely more and the disadvantages are few. In the field of education and entertainment, the vast importance of television cannot be denied. The censor board of television has become quite alert and has a great role in influencing channels to show purposeful and good programmes on the television to increase its utility.
